Ultimate Comics: Spider-man #17
Yet another issue of everybody’s new favorite Ultimate Spider-man, Miles Morales! We’re still knee deep in the “United We Stand” story arc and I’m going to be brutally honest with everyone here: I don’t really like it. I’m not saying its a bad story arc, its actually pretty interesting, but it really seems like the danger is lost without the other Ultimate comics.
I understand there’s a war and the country is dividing itself and all the other things that are explained on the first page, but what doesn’t translate is the urgency. The urgency of the entire story. I understand Miles’ story, and it keeps me on the edge of my seat, but I just wish there was a bigger picture to occasionally draw from.

Planetoid #4
Back with another issue of one of my favorite indie books. This comic is great and entirely done by one man, gotta give the guy credit, Ken Garing you rock.
The story is starting to unfold a bit more in this issue. All the characters have been introduced and now the adventure is underway. With a threat revealed and answer waiting to be found that means only one thing; epicness is coming.
I seriously can’t wait for the next issue, and I hope that more of those frog people show up, they’re my favorite.

Amazing Spider-man #700
All I have to say is, holy shit. This comic book was literally amazing. I don’t normally give spoilers away, but seeing as how by the time you read this review it will be common knowledge, I say “fuck it”.
That red haring they set for us with the Marbius side story served its purpose and sent me off the main trail. Morbius and Peter did not switch places, Peter is still stuck in Doc Ock’s dead body. Which makes Doc Ock Superior Spider-man. I understand now what Dan Slott meant about having to hide out for a few months after this issue was released. I can see how lots of Spider-man fans will hate the idea of Otto Octavius being Spider-man. I’m not, because I really want to see how it pans out in Superior Spider-man.
Its a damn shame that Peter Parker had to die in such a terrible way, but to be honest…I think this may have been the best. I like how they play up WHAT Spider-man is supposed to be not WHO. On that note, anyone COULD be Spider-man. I just hope Peter Parker doesn’t come back in two months and Superior Spider-man gets dropped, it will have made his death pointless.
Overall, this comic was great and shows that not everyone can be saved and that Marvel isn’t afraid to kill their most popular character. Let’s just hope Superior Spider-man is on par with Avengers Arena and doesn’t suck.

Amazing Spider-man #699.1
As some of you may know, Morbius, the Living Vampire will be getting his own series starting next year. Seems a bit strange given the circumstances Peter Parker and Doc Ock find themselves in at the moment. I know Marbius has had a series or two in the past, but the timing seems a bit odd.
But maybe its just a red haring to make me think Peter will switch bodies with Morbius. Making Morbius Superior Spider-man and Peter Morbius, the Living Vampire. Only time will tell, but I know its going to be EPIC!

Amazing Spider-man #699
We’re winding down to the end, everyone. There are only two issues left for Amazing Spider-man, afterwards we get an all new Superior Spider-man comic to venture into. Gotta say, I don’t know how Peter is going to get out of this one.
Some of us think that Alpha is going to be Superior or maybe even the Spider-man 2099 guy, but I haven’t seen any nods to them, so I doubt it.
This is one of those issues where everything we’ve known about the world of Spider-man is still true but they turn it on its head. I give Slott tons of kudos for pulling that off and cannot wait for the next issue, which is a .1 so maybe we’ll get that nod afterall.

Avengers Arena #1
Holy fucking shit! This comic is by far the best thing to come out of Marvel Now! I kid you not, this comic is brutal and epic. I had high hopes for it, seeing as how the plot “Avengers Academy done in the style of Battle Royale” is writing a pretty big check that most asses couldn’t cash. But let me tell you, for a first issue, its amazing.
Some people might not like it, but come on. What more do you expect in a comic like this? Its a bunch of mutants killing each other. And to start things off, X23 getting her face melted off. Literally amazing.
X23 is my favorite mutant so I’m a bit biased, anything with her in it I’ll buy. Even if her solo series was kind of dry at times.
Do yourselves a favor, ask Santa for this comic for xmas, there’s still time.

Ultimate Comics: Spider-man #16.1
Back with a new .1 for Ultimate Comics: Spider-man. As we all know, Miles is not the Spider-man Peter was, and yet he still gets treated the same way. Its like, no matter how much good either of them do, the city is still out to get them. Not the city as a whole, just cut throat journalists and cops…and gangsters, and mutant villains and … well you get the idea.
I love that about Miles’ story though, he’s just like Peter in so many ways and yet there’s enough difference that it doesn’t feel like we’re reading the same story with a Black/Puerto Rican kid in it.
I loved this .1 in particular because it didn’t focus entirely on Miles, and yet still had everything to do with him. Not to mention that cliff hanger they left us on, oh, boy! Can’t wait for the next issue, I’m telling you!
If you aren’t already reading Ultimate Comics: Spider-man, now it the perfect time to do so. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Hellraiser #20
Here it is, folks. The end of an arc for Clive Barker’s Hellraiser. It was a wild ride, I’m not gonna lie. I have to admit, however. That the first arc was better, but I did still enjoy how Clive depicted the end of times, and also how he wrapped things up at the end.
Spoiler alert! There’s more of this series to come next year, so be on the look out for more terrible things to spill out of hell. I’m really excited to see what they have in store for us. This is a great series, I’d suggest it to horror fans. The rest of you might just find it boring and difficult to keep up with. If not, we’re glad to bring you in to the world of fright that is Hellraiser.
Can’t wait for next year!

Scarlet Spider #11
Back with yet another issue of the Scarlet Spider, Venom, Carnage crossover. I’m going to be very honest right now: this comic series isn’t very good.
Like I said in my last review, the stuff in the Macroverse is great, its why I read two out of the three series regularly. But this whole Microverse stuff, is just too out there for me. I don’t relate or empathize with these characters. I do think the character named Bug is pretty cool, but it might just be because he looks like the missing fifth member of The Locust.
The thing that makes me think is: this series isn’t bad, I just don’t really care about any of the characters or the stuff they talk about. I just like the three main characters interacting with them. I sure hope things pick up in the next issue.

Avenging Spider-man Annual #1
Well, Avenging Spider-man finally got its first annual, very nice! Can’t believe its actually been a year since the series started. Feels a bit shorter than that honestly. Despite all the different adventures Spidey has in this series that follow main storylines, this one in particular is enjoyable. Its really light hearted and a fun read. But its not an essential for comic book collectors. I think the only thing that makes this one note worthy is the fact that its the first annual.
Regardless, the comic is solid and it was well made. Again, nothing really amazed me while reading it, but it was in no way a bad comic. If you have a few extra bucks and are wondering about it, I’d say pick it up.

Amazing Spider-man #698
Whoa, what a change in Parker. Its like he finally got over the stress of being a super hero and the lose of Silver Sable. But something feels a bit off with this issue, the change was too dramatic. Plus, Doc Oc has been saying some strange stuff. Want to know more? Read the comic.
Trolrololololo
But in all seriousness, this issue is odd. However, I feel that was an intentional decision by Slott. He’s been writing Avenging Spider-man for too long to just throw continuity out the window three issues before it ends. Something is brewing here people, I can feel it in my bones.
If you aren’t fans of Spidey, I’m sorry: that’s why your life is hard. But if you want redemption before the world ends, I say pick up this last story arc, its going to be a historical event in comic book history, for better or for worse.
Can’t wait for the next issue!

Scarlet Spider #10
Back with a new issue of the Minimum Carnage mini-series. This comic is a bit out there, and I bet coming from me that sounds a bit odd. Its not the idea of the mini universe they go to that makes it odd. Its all the weird looking characters. It feels like they took three modernized versions of iconic Marvel characters and threw them into a 1980’s sic-fi cartoon.
If you’re into that kind of stuff this comic is for you. If you were a fan of the last Carnage mini-series, you might want to pass on this one.
I really enjoy the story however. I think that the story, so far, in this comic is better than Carnage USA. Plus, I really like Kaine as Scarlet Spider, he’s a BAMF. Scarlet Spider is a great series but this mini-series seems a bit too far out of what has already been established in the main series. Granted it all starts out standard, and the bulk of this issue is okay, but then things get all weird there at the end.
So basically, everything in our universe is cool. I think that Venom and Scarlet Spider could make a great team, but all the mini universe stuff is just a bit too out there for me. I’ll continue to get the books, but I’m not sure how positive my reviews will be.

Hellraiser #19
Back again with more Hellraiser, from Clive Barker. This story is still hitting hard and its getting better with each new issue. I have to be honest, there were a few issues there in the middle that were pretty boring. These new issues however, make up for all the boring ones before them. The payoff is, now we understand why everything is happening the way it is and the impact of all of it.
The art is probably the only thing I have issues with. I enjoy the artwork, Janusz Ordon and Stephen Thompson are both on their games as far as the style goes. Especially the interactive flashback that Kristy is going through, they’re done well. But having said all that, its still not my favorite style of art. It seems like there is very little difference between the none hellish people visually. I sometimes found myself having to go back in order to double check who was who.
Overall, I still love this comic. The art has always been the way it is, the consistency is great. It also captures the tone of the story perfectly. But it still has a ways to go before its on the same level as the story.

Nancy in Hell on Earth #4
This comic took FOREVER to finally come out. But I can’t really blame Image for that, they do what they have to. Was it worth the wait? Yes, and no.
Yes, because the comic as a whole is great and solid, in the B-slasher flick way it was going for. No, because unless you had read the other issues before reading this one there’s a big disconnect.
This comic is definitely not for everyone. It has lots of blood, guts, demons and naked chicks. Yeah, its graphic as hell. Its also not a “mainstream” comic, so it seems like the creative team took a lot of risks with making it. Like I said, its graphic and there are a lot of things in this comic that could potentially get other comics destroyed. But they pull it off, and I think they do it very well.
The art and story both compliment each other very well and I’d love to see what else this team has to offer. I will be following the creative team behind Nancy in Hell on Earth, so be ready for some fucked up shit!

Ghostbusters 100-Page Spooktacular
I’m obviously a Ghostbusters fan, which means I like a bit of humor with my gore and a little gore with my humor. This comic in particular has segments that Sam Rami would approve of.
This is an annual and for those of you who don’t really get what that means, its a big book with a bunch of short stories that don’t follow the main storyline. It allows the series a place to breathe for a moment and explore other possibilities.
This has been my second favorite annual of 2012 so far (I only have one more left) but its second by only a bit.
In this annual we see the Busters in all kinds of adventures: everything from time travel to Thanksgiving dinner. The art direction in every single segment is awesome. Sometimes I have issues with this in annuals or even on going series, but the characters are all so iconic that its easy for the audience to roll with the artists’ punches.
Overall, this is a great annual. I’m really glad I shelled out the chedda for this one. So if you’re unsure about this series and just want a taste, this is right up your alley. Granted, annuals are always more expensive; so be prepared for that.
